One cool thing about this blog project has been watching my tastes change over the course of the year. For instance, if I were to re-do my top 10 list of 2013 movies today, it would probably look a little different. Similarly, if I were to take another look at my recent review of traffic, I might change my tune just a little since the delay was apparently understandably due to a water main break. And remember when I wrote that glowing review of naps? What was I thinking? A full night of sleep is clearly superior.
In my defense, I was not in a place to get a full night of sleep at the time. Naps were all I could manage. I’m still a little too busy (thanks in part to this blog), but the last couple of nights I have found myself in the enviable position of getting eight whole hours.
The “eight hours” thing is a bit of a myth. Everyone is different, of course, but sleep cycles tend to run about 90 minutes on average. So you really want to be asleep for 7.5 hours. Or 9. But maybe it takes you a little while to fall asleep, so we’ll round to 8.
I cannot deny that it is an awkward prospect. I wake up at 6 am each morning, so in order to be fully rested I need to get in bed around 10 o’clock. I don’t know about you, but that’s pretty early for me. I’m just hitting my creative peak around then – that’s probably why so many of my reviews get published so late. I recently changed up my review procedure though, and that has freed up my nights a little (has that negatively affected my page views? Seems like it). So on Monday I took a chance and hit the hay early.
And boy am I glad I did. I woke up so easily Tuesday morning, and I felt good. No real struggle to get into the shower. No dragging my feet once I got to work. Indeed I actually found myself to be in a much better mood in general. I once wrote a review about “being pleasant” and how difficult that can be. Well it’s a lot easier when you aren’t carrying a sleep debt on your back.
This new trend cannot hold forever – I know that. In fact the really ironic thing is that writing this review might be what keeps me from getting eight hours tonight. And even if I do keep the streak going, a short night is imminent (Interstellar midnight show, anyone?). I’m going to enjoy this newfound luxury for as long as I can. So if you’ll excuse me, I have a date with the Sandma’am.
